2011 Smith College Spring Bulb Show (Part 2)

Anatomy of a tulip

By the time I made it to the Smith College Spring Bulb Show many of the flowers had seen better days. The show runs March 5-20 and we visited on the 18th. Most of the tulips were wide open and days or moments away from losing their petals. I found this to be a great opportunity to focus on what a bee finds most attractive about a flower.

Truly an amazing variety of tulips. We don’t grow them a lot around here because deer love to eat tulips!

  1. Wow….truly gorgeous. I think the open tulips are probably more beautiful to photograph…with the different colors and the pollen, etc. Beautifully done! I planted some Pink Impression tulips last fall and I’m very excited for them to bloom!

  2. Really neat views of the tulips!
That is one problem to waiting til the last weekend to see the show with many flowers being past their prime. Your close-ups are so cool – what do you have for a macro lens?

  3. Wow, stunning! I’m a sucker for bright colors so all your shots were just right up my alley. Beautiful! I can’t even begin to pick a favourite.
